On Friday at approximately 3 p.m., a brush fire started in Templeton behind Templeton Grain and Feed. The fire burned just 100 yards east of Main Street in the Salinas River bed and along the railroad tracks.

By 3:30 p.m., the fire was approximately 2 acres, and not yet under control, according to Templeton Community Services District Manager Jeff Briltz. Cal Fire responded and at least six fire engines had responded to the blaze by 4 p.m.

A Cal Fire tanker plane and helicopter repeatedly dropped fire retardant and water from more than an hour on the brightly-burning fire, while a Cal Fire tactical plane circled high above.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s department closed 1st and 2nd streets in downtown Templeton. At least 100 locals gathered near the railroad tracks to watch firefighters wrestle to get control of the blaze.
