Veterans Day ceremony set for Nov. 11 at Faces of Freedom Memorial

Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial in Atascadero

Ceremony to include flyover, Quilts of Valor presentations, and Distinguished Veteran of the Year awards

– The Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial at the corner of Highway 41 and Portola. Seating is limited, and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs.

The ceremony will begin with a flyover by the Estrella Warbirds and the presentation of the colors by the Central Coast Vietnam Veterans Association, accompanied by the Pipes and Drum Corps. The Atascadero High School Choir will sing the national anthem.

This year’s program will feature a father-and-son speaking duo sharing perspectives on war and service from two generations, according to the foundation.

Veterans Day is also when Quilts of Valor are awarded to local veterans. This year, more than 25 veterans will receive quilts, and the foundation will recognize local veterans with the Distinguished Veteran of the Year award.

The ceremony will end with the laying of a wreath in memory of all veterans and the playing of taps.

A Kiwanis barbecue will follow the ceremony, with proceeds benefiting the foundation. A free lunch for 100 veterans has been donated by Heather and Brian Newsom.
