Twin Cities Hospital named to ‘maternity honor roll’
–Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, California, has been named to the California Health and Human Services Agency (CHHS) and Cal Hospital Compare Maternity Honor Roll for excellence in maternity care and, in particular, its low rates of cesarean section births (C-sections).
Childbirth is the number one reason for hospitalization in California (and the United States). For mothers, overuse of cesarean sections (C-sections) can result in higher rates of complications like hemorrhage, transfusions, infection, and blood clots. The surgery also can bring risks for babies, including higher rates of infection, respiratory complications, neonatal intensive care unit stays, and lower breastfeeding rates.
The 2020 Maternity Honor Roll recognizes 141 hospitals that met or surpassed the statewide target aimed at reducing births via C-section in first-time mothers with low-risk pregnancies. The award reflects data from California hospitals that offer maternity services and participate in the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative’s Maternal Data Center (CMQCC’s MDC).
The honor roll is the most recent of several honors for excellence in maternity care for Twin Cities, including two this past winter:
- Being recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC) with a score of 96 out of 100 (nationwide average for similarly-sized hospitals is 79)
- Being designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care for its quality maternity programs. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally-designated health care facilities that show meet specific, rigorous standards and demonstrate quality, overall patient satisfaction and a low percentage of early elective deliveries.
Also, Twin Cities gives parents an important tool to further enhance infant safety. By using new technology, that is entirely safe the baby, nurses scan the feet of newborns and capture detail of each baby’s footprint. Like fingerprints, footprints are unique to each newborn. Capturing this level of precision in a footprint enables the hospital, law enforcement agencies, and parents to identify a baby if the emergency need should ever arise. Just after scanning, parents receive a “Baby’s First Footprint” certificate as a lasting keepsake.
