Timber Fire burns 1,723 acres in Big Sur
Highway 1 has reopened, but evacuation orders remain in effect
– The Timber Fire had burned 1,723 acres in Big Sur and remained 5% contained as of Monday evening, according to Cal Fire.
The fire began Saturday night in a remote area of Los Padres National Forest, according to reports. Officials are investigating the cause.
Firefighters limited the fire to about 100 acres overnight into Sunday using ground crews, a bulldozer, an engine, and a helicopter capable of flying at night. Officials mapped the fire at 180.3 acres Sunday afternoon.
The fire grew to about 400 acres by Sunday night as it burned through grass, brush, and heavier vegetation in steep terrain. Officials said difficult access limited containment efforts.
By Monday morning, the fire had doubled in size to about 800 acres. It continued growing throughout the day, reaching 1,723 acres while remaining 5% contained.
Cal Fire and Big Sur Fire are assisting the U.S. Forest Service with the response. Crews have worked to limit the fire’s spread toward Big Sur and surrounding communities.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office issued evacuation orders for zones MRY-F025, MRY-F026, MRY-F027, and MRY-F028-A. Officials asked the public to avoid the area and keep roads clear for emergency crews.
“We are respectfully asking the public to stay out of the area,” the sheriff’s office said. “Roadways must remain clear so first responders can work safely and effectively. Unnecessary traffic and sightseeing in the fire zone create hazards for emergency crews and slow down critical operations.”
The California Highway Patrol closed Highway 1 to the public Monday afternoon between Point Sur Lighthouse and Vista Point. Officials later reopened the highway but encouraged motorists to avoid the area and follow evacuation orders and instructions from emergency personnel.
