A variety of programs will run through April

The County of San Luis Obispo Public Libraries will host a series of programs as part of the “Book of the Year” countywide literary event in partnership with Cuesta College and Cal Poly Student Diversity & Belonging.

This year’s Book of the Year selection is “There There” by award-winning author Tommy Orange. A New York Times 10 Best Books of the Year title and winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award, “There There” follows 12 characters from Native communities traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow. Individual copies and book club kits of “There There” are available to check out through the Library.

Throughout March and April, the Library invites readers to participate in book discussions, land acknowledgement programs with local Chumash and Tatavium elder Alan Salazar, and virtual California State Park tours of the Sue-meg Yurok village and Kashtayit State Marine Conservation Area.

The “Book of the Year” main event features an author lecture and book signing with Tommy Orange on April 21, 5 p.m., at Cuesta College. Tickets will be available at tickets.cuesta.edu beginning February 1.

“A community reads program connects readers to timely books and current local issues and can inspire important discussions and can help bring a community together,” said Erica Thatcher, Engagement and Marketing Coordinator for the County of SLO Public Libraries.
