SLO hospital offers free skin cancer screening for Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Screenings scheduled May 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Adventist Health Sierra Vista will host a free skin cancer screening event in San Luis Obispo in recognition of Melanoma Monday and Skin Cancer Awareness Month in May.

The event will take place May 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Adventist Health Sierra Vista auditorium, located at 1010 Murray Ave.

The screening is open to the public. Walk-ins are welcome if space is available, and registration is recommended. People can register online at adventisthealthcentralcoast.org/skincheck.

Attendees will be screened by a licensed dermatology provider in a private space while wearing a hospital gown. The provider will perform a full-body examination to look for spots that may be concerning for skin cancer. If follow-up dermatology care or biopsies are recommended, attendees will receive referral information for local dermatology providers.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with millions of cases diagnosed each year. It is also one of the most preventable cancers and is highly treatable when found early.

Adventist Health Central Coast Network operates two hospitals in San Luis Obispo County, including Adventist Health Sierra Vista in San Luis Obispo and Adventist Health Twin Cities in Templeton, along with primary and specialty care clinics throughout the county.
