Paso Robles kids make scarves for those in need

—With cold weather and rain still in the forecast, a Paso Robles family and friends have resolved to make scarves for those in need while teaching children about the importance of making a positive impact on the community. Stormy Capalare helped her children and their friends organize the project; the children are Kai (7 years old), Kalani (4 ½ years old), Lilli (3 years old), Char (3 years old) and Arlyn (almost 3 years old).
“A couple inspirational stories of scarf making for people in need got me thinking of ways Kai, Kalani, and our other friends with little hands could successfully make scarves…The joy and love they experienced after making the scarves was priceless,” said Capalare.
Capalare and the kids decided to make scarves out of braid fabric with fleece and other fibers. They called multiple businesses about material donations, which Capalare noted as a good learning opportunity for the older children, including being turned away by some businesses. Paso Robles fiber store Birch, which Capalare calls “one of my happy places”, donated most of the fabric for the project.

After halting the project for a week due to the flu, the children eagerly got to work. The goal was to make a scarf to give away and a scarf for the child to keep. Some of the children exceed their goal to make multiple scarves.
“The scarves the kiddos keep are a reminder of how great it feels to give and help someone in need and the scarves they give to those in need we thought would act as a big hug reminding that person that someone with little hands and a big heart cares…sharing this experience with Kai, Kalani, Lilli, Char and Arlyn is a true gift,” said Capalare.
The project’s next steps are to find a place to hang the scarves up around Paso Robles with a tag. One idea for a tag will say “Made with little hands with big hearts in Paso” and “If you need me I am yours”. Capalare welcomes anyone who would like to participate and will cut and deliver the donated fabric.
