–The City of Atascadero and the North County Farmer’s Market announced the relocation of Farmer’s Market to the Sunken Gardens in downtown Atascadero. The move from the shopping center at 8200 El Camino Real to the Sunken Gardens will take place on Wednesday, April 5. The Atascadero Farmer’s Market will be held at the Sunken Gardens every Wednesday from 3 – 6 p.m. The city and the North County Farmers market will team up for a grand opening celebration on April 5 with food trucks and entertainment to welcome everyone back to the downtown location.

The timing of the move takes place just prior to spring break for the surrounding schools. While school is still in session, families picking up students will have the opportunity to shop for fresh dinner items as they pick up their children from school. “The return of Farmer’s Market to our downtown will be a welcomed addition for our merchants and restaurants in the surrounding area. We are excited with their decision as this location offers a great opportunity for growth and residents to enjoy a central location along with the beautiful surroundings of the downtown area.” said Mayor Tom O’Malley.

The idea of returning the market to the downtown location began in November 2015. “We wanted to make sure that the current customer base was open to the change and that our farmers saw the opportunity and from a timing perspective were comfortable to make the move to a new location,” said Robyn Gable, Manager for North County Farmers Market. The market had previously been located at the Sunken Gardens, however after the 2003 San Simeon earthquake, the North County Farmers Market Board decided to move to the shopping center location.”

The impact of the move resulting from the 2003 earthquake and the closure of city hall, together with the multiple changes in the grocery stores at the current location has had an impact on the farmer’s market. With Historic City Hall restored and open to the public, the market’s return to the Sunken Gardens is seen as a good move.

The North County Farmers Market will continue to be at its current location until March 29th. There will be plenty of signage and reminders that the market will be moving over the next few weeks. More information will be forthcoming on the details of the grand opening to be held on April 5.
