New college comes to Atascadero
San Joaquin Valey College now enrolling students at new Atascadero campus
–San Joaquin Valley College has announced a new career education resource with the opening of their Atascadero campus in Fall 2018. There is a lot of community enthusiasm for this new education and career training alternative where post high school education options are a little scarce.
“The career college isn’t a well-known thing here,” explains Alyssa Perry Rodriguez, Atascadero Campus President. “Most students just getting out of high school think they have to choose between going to a 4-year university or getting a job; there aren’t a lot of choices, especially close by.”
Atascadero is SJVC’s 15th campus location, and it will offer three of the college’s most popular programs: Medical Assisting, Medical Office Administration and Business Administration. Graduates of these programs earn a Certificate of Completion along with the knowledge and skill to enter their career field with confidence.
“These are our ‘bread-and-butter’ programs,” says Rodriguez. “They stood out as having great potential for success in an area with this population size and employment opportunities for our graduates. We have three large hospitals between San Luis Obispo and Templeton and a ton of medical and business offices within a 20-mile radius of the college.”
Atascadero is the largest city in SLO county that also includes Templeton, Arroyo Grande, Morro Bay, Paso Robles and Pismo Beach. There are 13 high schools in this six-city area whose graduating seniors will benefit from a career college with SJVC’s reputation for placing well-trained professionals into the workforce.
“We are a 40-year-old institution, and we know what we’re doing,” says Rodriguez. “It is exciting to come to this area and introduce ourselves. The local Chamber of Commerce is very interested in what we’re doing and what we are bringing to the community.”
SJVC Atascadero looks forward to many years of serving the SLO community residents and its businesses.
Smaller classroom sizes with tight teacher-to-student ratios, emphasis on hands-on learning techniques, and focused career services support make student and graduate success a clear priority. “We will know that we are successful by making sure that our students move successfully through their programs and become valued professionals in their fields of study,” Alyssa says.
Although the new campus is still under construction, SJVC staff will operate out of a temporary location until the three-classroom campus is ready for occupation. “Lots of people drive by and are trying to guess what this space will be,” says Alyssa. “There’s a lot of chatter and speculation about what is coming to town.”
