Morro Coast Audubon Society to host raptor program
Harris spent 17 months chasing 53 raptor species across 34 states as part of what he describes as his version of a Raptor Big Year.
– The Morro Coast Audubon Society will host its October Zoom Community Program, “Raptor Quest: Chasing America’s Raptors,” presented by Scott Harris, on Monday, Oct. 19, from 7 to 8 p.m.

Harris spent 17 months chasing 53 raptor species across 34 states as part of what he describes as his version of a Raptor Big Year. His presentation, RaptorQuest, will cover his adventures, misadventures, successes, and failures.
His experiences included traveling through temperatures ranging from minus 36 degrees Fahrenheit to more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, getting on a bird just in time, and missing birds by minutes.
Harris will also discuss the people he met, what he learned, and why he is already working on his next adventure.
Harris became an avid birder after he and his wife, Randi, retired to South Carolina in March 2020. He has since developed an interest in mammals and has sold his photographs around the world.
His most recent book, RaptorQuest: Chasing America’s Raptors, chronicles his year-long effort to find every species of raptor in the Lower 48 states.
Harris also hosts the NaturallyScott podcast, which focuses on birds, wildlife, and the outdoors. He recently signed a multi-book deal that includes his upcoming book, Why We Love Birds: 52 Birders on Birding.
His interests and hobbies include collecting editions of John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley, playing harmonica in a blues band, and writing books. He has written more than 50 books during the past 10 years.
The book Harris will discuss at the program marks his first entry into the world of birding and birds.
