–Political consultant John Peschong of Templeton was elected Tuesday to the position of San Luis Obispo County 1st District supervisor, representing Paso Robles and surrounding areas. He beat Paso Robles Mayor Steve Martin for the position, 55-percent to 44-percent.

The final unofficial results give Peschong 9,164 votes to Martin’s 7,330.

Peschong, a Republican, ran a well-financed, conservative campaign against Martin, a Democrat. His election will tilt the board of supervisors a bit to the right, as he replaces the retiring Frank Mecham, a centrist.

Peschong says he’s anxious to serve the residents of the North County. He says he wants to address the gang problem and work with the County Sheriff’s Department to devote more money to fight gang activity.

Mayor Steve Martin says he’s grateful for the support he received, but said he was outspent by 5 to 1 in a supervisorial district which is generally conservative. Martin issued a statement congratulating Peschong on his victory: “I would like to extend my congratulations to Mr. John Peshong and his supporters for their successful campaign. They were well-organized, effective and civil.”
