Illegal fireworks enforcement increases leading up to Fourth of July

– The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that fireworks, other than permitted professional displays, are prohibited in all unincorporated areas of the county ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

The ban includes Oceano, Cayucos, Nipomo, Avila Beach, Shandon, Creston, Santa Margarita, San Miguel, and all other unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, illegal fireworks can cause fires, injuries, property damage, and increased demand on emergency resources. Officials said fireworks can also affect pets, livestock, veterans, and others who are sensitive to loud noises.

The Sheriff’s Office said it will deploy maximum staffing throughout the county during the holiday weekend and will take a zero-tolerance approach to illegal fireworks violations. Deputies will enforce the county’s fireworks ordinance and respond to reports of illegal fireworks activity.

Residents can report the use of illegal fireworks by calling the Fireworks Reporting Hotline at (805) 781-1933.

Officials said violations may result in:

  • Fines of up to $1,000 per violation.
  • Separate citations for each individual discharge of fireworks.
  • Parents or guardians being held responsible for violations committed by minors.
  • Property owners being cited for fireworks used on their property, even if they did not ignite them.
  • Charges for firefighting, law enforcement, medical response, and fireworks disposal costs.
  • Criminal charges for possessing or using dangerous fireworks.

The Sheriff’s Office also reminded residents that Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $500 for information leading to the identification and arrest of individuals possessing illegal fireworks with the intent to sell them.

Anyone with information about the possession or sale of illegal fireworks can contact San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers by calling (805) 549-7867, using the free P3 Tips mobile app, or visiting the Crime Stoppers website.
