Hospice seeking open-hearted community members
–Hospice of San Luis Obispo County (Hospice SLO County) is offering an opportunity for community members to attend a training program to become in-home volunteers. The training will equip participants to provide assistance to individuals coping with a life-limiting illness and their families. The first of six sessions begins Thursday, Oct. 4, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Hospice SLO County, 1304 Pacific Street, San Luis Obispo.
Volunteers are the center of the free non-medical support services Hospice SLO County provides throughout the county. As an in-home volunteer, participants will offer respite care, practical assistance, emotional support, companionship and comfort to those with a life-limiting illness and their loved ones. Volunteers provide 3-4 hours of service per week.
This comprehensive 30-hour training explores personal attitudes about dying and death; the history of hospice; current medical and non-medical approaches to end-of-life care; communication skills; anticipatory grief and bereavement; and spiritual, practical and emotional support needs of clients and families (including family dynamics).
“I arrived to the volunteer training nervous with many questions – who would be there, what would this training be like, what emotions would it bring up, and was I prepared to move forward with volunteering at this time?” said Sandy, who attended the training this past spring. “Right from the beginning, it became clear that this was going to be an excellent and engaging training. I felt uplifted, supported and ready to move forward.”
This training is a pre-requisite for other trainings offered by Hospice SLO County including End-of-Life Doula, Grief Companions and Community Response.
Preregistration is required. Space is limited.
This San Luis Obispo training session will take place: Thursdays, 1 – 6 p.m. on Oct 4, 11, 18, 25, and Nov 1, 8.
For the past 40 years, Hospice SLO County has depended on the generosity and time of volunteers to provide free support services to the community. To preregister or for more information, please visit www.hospiceslo.org or call (805) 544-2266.
