Original story posted June 16

–A wildland fire that sparked in the Avila Beach and Pismo Beach area Monday at about 2:48 p.m. prompted the evacuation of residents and caused a freeway closure. Highway 101 was closed from Mattie Road to San Luis Bay Dr.

Authorities lifted evacuations late Monday night after crews made progress against the blaze.

At one point, flames burned right up to some houses in the Shell Beach area but fire officials said no buildings were damaged, according to the Associated Press. The fire was 10-percent contained late Monday at 400 acres burned. About 100 homes and structures are threatened.

“Fire activity has moderated as the sun has set and as the wind has subsided,” according to a statement from CalFire SLO. “Structure threat has been mitigated. Fire activity continues to burn within the perimeter. Crews are expected to continue to improve lines and mop up.”

A total of 42 fire engines, three water tenders, six helicopters, 10 hand crews, seven dozers, and 10 air tankers responded to the fire. Numerous firefighting air tankers from throughout the state are flying fire suppression missions as conditions allow.

There was no immediate word on a cause. No further information was available Tuesday morning. Updates will be posted.
