Candidate announces Atascadero City Council re-election campaign

Campaign highlights public safety and homelessness initiatives
– Atascadero Councilwoman Susan Funk has formally begun her campaign for re-election to the City Council in the Nov. 3 general election.
Funk, who has served on the City Council for nearly eight years, said her priorities have included downtown revitalization, public safety, infrastructure improvements, and the city’s finances.
“When I first stepped up to be a fresh voice on the Council in 2018, people were frustrated by all the things Atascadero lacked: restaurants, shopping, and things for young people to do,” Funk said. “Now downtown is beginning to thrive, restaurants and small businesses are opening up, and Atascadero is becoming the place to be. I’m running for re-election because I want to keep Atascadero moving forward. Let’s make sure Atascadero remains a great place to live, work, raise a family, build a business, and enjoy your grandchildren.”
According to the campaign, Atascadero has added police officers, replaced fire engines, and launched a $37 million public safety facilities project that received unanimous City Council approval. The campaign also noted that the city’s more than 70-year-old downtown fire station was demolished this month to make way for a new two-story fire station and emergency operations center on the same site.
“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together, but there is key work yet to be done,” Funk said. “I look forward to continuing to serve the residents of Atascadero and working every day to keep our city moving forward.”
The campaign said Funk has received support from community members across the political spectrum. According to the campaign, public disclosure filings expected at the end of the month will show the campaign has raised more money at this point than during Funk’s previous two successful City Council campaigns, with most contributions totaling $100 or less from individual donors.
“Since Day 1, I’ve been proud to be supported by Republicans, Independents and Democrats,” Funk said.
Funk serves on several committees, including the Atascadero Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency and the countywide Homeless Services Oversight Council, which she chaired for three years. According to the campaign, she helped develop the 2022 Countywide Strategic Plan on Homelessness, which has resulted in a 42% reduction in unsheltered homelessness countywide.
