Elementary school remains closed for bomb-threat investigation

Update Sept. 14, 7 a.m.:

San Gabriel Elementary School in Atascadero will remain closed today while authorities continue an investigation into a bomb threat, according to Atascadero School District officials. Investigators are looking into threatening letters and a suspicious device left on campus, forcing an early morning evacuation on Friday.

The school district issued a statement Sunday afternoon:

“The Atascadero Unified School District is committed to safety as our number one priority for students, staff, and community members. AUSD is continuing to work closely with the Atascadero Police Department and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that our students, staff, and the community remain safe.

“The staff of San Gabriel Elementary School responded in an appropriate, swift, and professional manner to the incident that warranted the closure of the campus Friday. Additionally, students and parents remained calm during the evacuation which enabled all individuals to safely exit the campus in an orderly
manner. The staff members at Hope Lutheran Church and Santa Rosa Academic Academy supported the displaced students with care and thoughtfulness.

“Law enforcement has requested additional time to complete their investigation; therefore, out of an overabundance of precaution, school for San Gabriel Elementary School students and staff will be held at other school sites until law enforcement completes their investigation. AUSD is working with law enforcement to determine a safe and appropriate time frame for students and staff to return back to school at San Gabriel Elementarv.

Beginning Monday, September 14, 2015, pre-school and kindergarten will be held at Santa Rosa Academic Academy, first grade through third grade will be held at
Santa Margarita Elementary, and fourth grade through sixth grade will be held at San Benito Elementary School. San Gabriel Elementary School parents will receive a direct communication from AUSD about transportation via email and the automated phone calling system.

“The Atascadero Unified School District is committed to student, staff, and community safety, dedicated to student achievement, and honored to serve the great community of Atascadero. AUSD will not let this incident interfere with our mission of educating the top students in the nation.”
