Birding enthusiasts will flock to Morro Bay for annual bird festival

Festival includes over 200 events

– Birding enthusiasts are flocking to Morro Bay as the annual Morro Bay Bird Festival kicks off, running from Jan. 11 to Jan. 15, at the Morro Bay Community Center.

With bird-watching gaining popularity, Morro Bay stands out as a prime winter birding destination in California. The festival includes over 200 events, offering registered patrons various activities, including guided birding walks, expert birder presentations, workshops on bird identification, photography, and conservation, as well as visits to the festival’s exhibit hall to learn about local birding organizations. Attendees can also partake in social events and activities.

Approximately 800 registrants from 30 states and two countries are expected over the five-day period. Twelve retail stores and 20 restaurants in Morro Bay will be providing discounts to all participants during the festival.

Online registration has closed, but in-person registration commences on Thursday, Jan. 11, at 7 a.m. at the Morro Bay Community Center.

In addition to registration-required events, the festival includes a Community Family Day at the Morro Bay Community Center. This event, operating on a first-come, first-served basis and not requiring registration, features activities such as Nature Journaling, owl pellet dissection, crafts, live critter interactions, and a stroll through the vendor bazaar and marketplace to fill out the “Passport to Knowledge.”
