Police association joins firefighters union in backing incumbent in Nov. 3 race
– The Atascadero Police Association has endorsed Atascadero City Council Member Susan Funk for reelection in the Nov. 3 election, according to a news release from her campaign.
Funk, who has served on the council since 2018, is the only incumbent in the race. Atascadero voters can vote for two of the four candidates on the ballot for two council seats. A-Town Daily News previously reported that Atascadero Professional Firefighters, International Association of Fire Fighters Local 3600, also endorsed Funk. The police association and the firefighters union also endorsed candidate Mike Avila, according to a news release from his campaign.
“Throughout her years of service on the City Council, Susan has demonstrated a strong commitment to the Atascadero community and to the responsibilities that come with serving its residents,” said Sam Rodriguez, president of the Atascadero Police Association.
“Our community asks a lot of its law enforcement officers,” said Funk. “A key element of my role as a Councilmember is to make sure that all of our first responders have reliable funding for the training, infrastructure, equipment and personnel they need to do their vital work.”
According to the campaign, during Funk’s time on the council Atascadero has added police officers, integrated mental health expertise into policing, and launched a $37 million public safety facilities project that the council supported unanimously. Construction on the new police dispatch center is under way.
The campaign said Funk’s other endorsers include former Atascadero Mayor Tom O’Malley, former County Supervisor Jim Patterson, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 639, the Central Coast Labor Council, the Central Coast Building Trades, and the Home Builders Association of the Central Coast PAC.
