Anthony Kalvans exits county supervisor race

Four candidates remain in the first district contest

–San Luis Obispo County First District Supervisor candidate Anthony “Bear” Kalvans, a San Miguel Community Services District director, has withdrawn his name from the race in a statement he released on Friday. The 22-year-old cited family health issues for the withdrawal, and said many things happened in his family that necessitated putting off his candidacy, though he did not say if he would run in the future.

“Service above self has always been a personal mantra of mine and I am proud of the conversations that were started and continue to be had since the start of my candidacy for supervisor,” Kalvans said. “Although I have suspended my campaign, I plan to keep fighting for my friends and neighbors here in the North County. I appreciate all the support I have received. I am looking forward to supporting the candidate that shares my beliefs.”

His early exit still leaves four people in the race for the seat: Paso Robles Mayor Steve Martin, Paso Robles Councilman John Hamon, Paso Robles resident Dale Gustin and Templeton resident John Peschong, who recently announced his candidacy. The seat is currently held by Frank Mecham, who has held the seat for two terms. Kalvans joined the race in June, challenging Martin and Hamon, the only other candidates at the time. The San Miguel resident said he entered the race because the district is made up of more than just the city of Paso Robles.

“… It is made up of many people, both urban and rural, whom deserve to have their voices heard,” he said in June. “It is truly unfortunate that despite going through several droughts in the past, the solutions the board of supervisors has pushed forward with has mostly benefited consultants while projects still remain unfunded. I want to start moving forward with the other projects on the table, so I can create a stable future for our grandchildren and their grandchildren.”

Kalvans currently is vice chairman of the Paso Basin Advisory Committee and is vice president of the Special District Association, which represents 35 community service districts and other government boards across the county. He is also member of the San Miguel Lions Club and Native Sons. He graduated from Paso Robles High School in 2011.

The seats held by Third Supervisor Adam Hill and Fifth District Supervisor Debbie Arnold are also up for grabs in the 2016 election.
