– The Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum has opened a special exhibit commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“On 9/11, I remember…: Reflections 25 Years Later” is on display through early October at the museum, 801 Grand Ave., Suite 102, in San Luis Obispo. Admission is free. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

The exhibit presents the events of Sept. 11 and their lasting effects on the nation, the military, and generations of veterans and their families.

The exhibit was curated by museum volunteer Steve David in recognition of the 25th anniversary of the attacks. The museum said the exhibit provides a place for community members and visitors to learn about the events surrounding Sept. 11, remember those who were lost and reflect on the lasting effects of the day.

The exhibit was inspired in part by reflections shared by retired Navy officer John Krause, who visited San Luis Obispo last year as the 2025 keynote speaker at the museum’s annual Veterans Day ceremony.

The museum also invites visitors to contribute to a Community Reflection Journal connected to the exhibit. Visitors can share where they were when they first heard the news, what they remember most or what they want future generations to know.

Children and younger people who do not personally remember Sept. 11 can participate by sharing what the day means to them today through words or artwork.

People who cannot visit the museum can submit handwritten entries by mail or email them to ccvmm.programs@gmail.com for inclusion in the journal.

Through its Veteran History Program, the museum has preserved more than 500 veterans’ stories. The museum encourages post-9/11 veterans to contact the museum about recording their own histories. The service is free.

Schools, veterans’ organizations, civic groups and other groups can arrange special tours of the exhibit.
