– The City of Atascadero will host its 10th Annual Tamale Festival on May 1 and May 2 in the Sunken Gardens and downtown Atascadero.
The two-day event will begin with “Fiesta Friday” on May 1 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Organizers said the opening night will feature tamale vendors offering food for purchase ahead of the main event. The Central Coast Zoo Foundation will provide alcoholic beverages for purchase, including margaritas, wine, beer, and cider. Live music is scheduled, including a performance by the Zongo All-Star Band.
The main event will take place May 2 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Organizers said more than 100 vendors are expected, including more than 20 tamale vendors representing locations across California. Vendors will offer a range of tamales, including traditional, gourmet, and sweet varieties, along with other food and merchandise.

Entertainment on May 2 will include an emcee, Francisco Ramirez, and scheduled performances by Manuel Enrique, Mariachi Azteca de Oro, Mariachi Lo Mejor de Jalisco Mariachi Band, the Ballet Folklórico Flor de Luna dancers, the Paso A Posito Folklorico dance group, and the Brass Mash band. Additional activities will include bounce houses, obstacle courses, bungee jumps, face painting, balloon animals, and a photo booth featuring a miniature donkey named Waffles.
Organizers said a “Best Tamale Contest” will be held, with winners announced around 12 p.m. Additional contests include a Chihuahua pet and costume contest at 2 p.m. and a tamale eating contest at 3 p.m., both scheduled to take place on the steps of City Hall.
The event is free to attend, with food, beverages, activities, and merchandise available for purchase. Proceeds from adult beverage sales on both days will benefit the Central Coast Zoo Foundation.
