Play asks, ‘what is art?’

–Wine Country Theatre will be bringing the comedy, Art, to two special venues: Studios on the Park in Paso Robles and Bru Coffehouse in Atascadero, this weekend.

The 1998 Tony Award winner for Best Play poses the question “what is art?” After Serge buys a large, expensive all-white painting, Marc is horrified to discover it isn’t a joke. The divisive piece strains their friendship, with Yvan caught in the middle trying to please both with his opinion. This clever comedy, with its air of sophistication and hilarious character relationships is produced by Wine Country Theatre and directed by Anet Carlin.

Wine Country Theatre has arranged partnerships with two special venues, Bru, a Coffeehouse in Atascadero and Studios on the Park, an artist’s co-operative in Paso Robles. Carlin says that she, “Loves to take theatre into unusual venues. It surprises the audience while allowing them to be comfortable and at ease. Set amidst the work of contemporary artists, the audience can enjoy the play even more keenly. Most importantly, it’s very funny.”

Art been lauded all over the world, having won an Olivier Award for Best Comedy and Tony Award for Best Play. Presented as a Staged Reading, this represents a new adventure for Wine Country Theatre, a professional-caliber community theatre in its third year of production. “We love the opportunity to expose our audiences to less known works” states Cynthia Anthony, executive director. “It also allows very fine talent the chance to perform without the demanding schedule of a full run. This show will introduce three actors to the North County, although they have extensive professional credits, Stuart Wegner, Jorge Manly-Gil and Brent Keast.” “We are proud to collaborate with two new venues, and excited to try this new approach to bringing quality live theatre to the community.”

Bru Coffeehouse, located at 5760 El Camino Real in Atascadero, will have its full coffee and food menu available for purchase. Wine will be available as well. Studios on the Park in Paso Robles will sell wine to enjoy during the performance.

Show dates are Saturday, Nov. 5 at Bru Coffeehouse and Sunday and Monday, Nov. 6 and 7 at Studios on the Park. Show time is 7:30. All tickets are $10 and are available on the website, www.WineCountryTheatre.com or by calling 1-800-838-3006. Recommended for age 16 and up due to strong language.
