Volunteers needed for the annual Atascadero Creek and Salinas River clean up day
Extra health safety measures will be in place
The twenty-fifth annual Atascadero Creek and Salinas River cleanup day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. and is in need of volunteers.
Sponsors of the event include the Atascadero Mutual Water Company (AMWC), the City of Atascadero and Waste Management.
Due to Covid-19 there will be safety precautions in place, so all of the volunteers can help clean up the creek and river without risking their wellbeing. It is recommended that volunteers follow the Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines of six feet of social distancing.
Volunteers are recommended to bring a few supplies:
- Work gloves
- Sturdy closed-toe shoes
- A small backpack to carry water
Registration will begin on the morning of the clean up day at 8:30 a.m. at the AMWC Yard on Sycamore Ave.
Water will be provided, but there will not be any additional refreshments or lunch at the conclusion of the event. Volunteers will assist with clearing Atascadero Creek and sections of the Salinas River, which are the primary source of recharge for Atascadero’s groundwater aquifers, and keeping these waterways healthy and free of pollution is an important part of protecting Atascadero’s water supply.
Team leaders will not be assigned this year, but volunteers will be assigned to a specific creek section. It is extremely helpful if volunteers have trucks to haul debris to the AMWC Yard.
