Vegetation fire sparks in open field in Atascadero
–On Tuesday, June 30, at 9:26 a.m., Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services responded to a vegetation fire at the corner of West Front Road and San Rafael in an open field next to a residence.
Upon arrival, the responding fire unit found a fire approximately 25 feet by 50 feet in size, burning in seasonal grasses with the potential to spread up to 10 acres with one residence that would have been immediately threatened. The fire was burning at a moderate rate of spread through a field that was weed abated. Even though weed abatement had taken place, the fire was moving quickly towards the structures. Fire crews were able to immediately stop the forward spread of the fire and began mopping up hot spots and cutting a hand line around the perimeter.
The fire was contained to a half-acre and in less than ten minutes. Fire crews remained at the scene for approximately one hour for overhaul. In addition to firefighters and Atascadero Police Department for traffic control, Templeton Fire and Emergency Services, Cal Fire, and Atascadero State Hospital also responded. Due to the quick turnaround in stopping the forward movement of the fire, Templeton and Cal Fire were canceled prior to arrival.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
