– As of Monday, Atascadero has an urgent care facility at 9700 El Camino Real, next to the post office. This is the third urgent care owned and operated by Dr. Eric Sorensen, the other two in Morro Bay and Hanford.

“My father was a physician – we’d talk about having a facility in Morro Bay,” Sorensen said. “So I took a shot at it, finally.” That was six years ago.

The medical office is a full-service center with on site x-ray, lab and minor procedures. It is first-come, first-served and takes insurance, MediCare, workers comp, CoveredCa and cash. It does not take straight MediCal, however. Sorensen said that the urgent care is not meant to replace a person’s primary care physician, that his offices send patients who have primary care doctors back to them.

Sorensen has been a doctor since 1980. He’s worked as an obstetrician, surgeon, family practice doctor, and urgent care doctor. His father is a doctor, and his son is also a doctor, opening his own practice in 2013. He’s one of eight kids, and all of them work in some form of medicine. One of Sorensen’s brothers and one sister work in his practices, along with his daughter, son-in-law and wife.

“We’re excited to be there – we think it’s going to be very beneficial thing to the area,” Sorensen said.

Atascadero Urgent Care has three employees: one front office, one medical assistant/x-ray technician and one doctor or physician’s assistant. Sorensen is the only doctor in the practice and has four physician’s assistant that rotate between the practices with him. He and his wife, Betsy, live in Visalia and have a home in Morro Bay.

The urgent care facility is open daily: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

“If things progress as they have at my other urgent cares, we’ll probably be open 12 hours Monday through Saturday and eight hours on Sunday,” Sorensen said.
