– The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office has released video footage of a deputy-involved shooting incident that took place in Templeton on Jan. 29, 2025.

The video was made public Tuesday as required by state law.

The footage contains graphic content, and viewer discretion is advised.

Update: Sheriff’s office releases details on deputy-involved shooting in Templeton

– The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is releasing new information on the deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday in Templeton. The suspect in that incident has been identified as 37-year-old Thomas Farrell of Templeton.

On Wednesday, deputies responded to a report of shots heard in the 1200 block of S. Main Street, near the area of Templeton High School. Based on the investigation by detectives in the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit, Farrell fired shots at the first patrol unit to arrive on the scene hitting the vehicle multiple times. As a result of that action, Farrell has now been booked into custody on two counts of attempted murder. The Deputies in that unit were not injured.

A second patrol unit arrived on the scene seconds later and a deputy in that unit engaged with Farrell and the suspect was struck by gunfire. Deputies administered medical aid to Farrell before he was transported to a local hospital. The suspect remains in stable condition. No deputies in the second unit were injured.

Per sheriff’s office protocol for these types of incidents, all four deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave and are required to attend mandatory crisis counseling.

Detectives believe this was an isolated incident. There was no connection to Templeton High School and there is no further public safety risk.

Sheriff’s deputies shoot armed suspect in Templeton

– Sheriff’s deputies shot a 37-year-old man after he fired at patrol units responding to reports of gunfire near Templeton High School on Wednesday night, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the 1200 block of South Main Street after reports of shots heard in the area. When the first patrol unit arrived, the suspect fired multiple rounds at the vehicle, striking it several times. The deputies inside were not injured.

A second patrol unit following closely behind engaged with the suspect. A deputy in that unit fired at the man, hitting him. Deputies provided medical aid before he was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition. No deputies were injured.

The sheriff’s major crimes unit is investigating the shooting. Authorities said there is no further danger to the public.

As a result of the investigation, the south end of Main Street past the high school was closed to traffic. Officials said the closure is not expected to impact traffic to Templeton High School, which will be notified this morning.

No further details were released.
