Police arrest man during traffic stop for concealed weapon, resisting arrest
–On March 10, at approximately 10:38 a.m., an officer from the Atascadero Police Department observed a vehicle traveling in the 5800 block of El Camino Real at an unsafe speed. The officer initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle pulled into the alley behind the businesses.
Upon contact, the driver, identified as Brian Perales, 20-years-old, from Bakersfield, said that although the vehicle belonged to him, it wasn’t registered in his name, nor did he have any paperwork inside the car. When asked if there was any paperwork in the glovebox, APD officers noticed a significant change in Perales’ demeanor and he became nervous.
When asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, Perales admitted there was a handgun inside the glovebox. Perales was directed to exit the vehicle and complied with the officer’s directions. During the subsequent investigation, Perales mentioned he had been recently released from custody and knew he wasn’t supposed to possess a firearm because he had a felony conviction.
As the investigation progressed, Perales appeared to become increasingly nervous and stopped complying with the directions of officers. At one point, Perales attempted to run away and a struggle ensued. He was eventually detained, with minor injuries sustained by both Perales and arresting officers. He was placed under arrest for delaying or resisting an officer, for being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a concealed firearm. He was transported and booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail.
