Third annual Tamale Festival to be held Jan. 20

—The third annual Tamale Festival will showcase over 40 food and merchant vendors on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held at the Sunken Gardens in Atascadero. The festival will have longer hours this year and offer more than 20,000 tamales.

The tamales are handmade, and may be from a traditional recipe or a sweet, dessert type. There will be a “Best Tamale” contest that attendees can vote on, along with a tamale eating contest. Live music will accompany the event, including the Mariachi Mexicanisimo Band and Manuel Santos. There will also be fun activities for younger guests. While the event is free to attend, tamales average $3-4 individually. The event will still occur, rain or shine.
