Symphony of the Vines gets its first executive director
–James Davis has been selected to serve as North County nonprofit orchestra Symphony of the Vines’ first executive director. He began his time as head of the nonprofit this fall.
“James is our first [executive director],” Symphony of the Vines Music Director Dr. Greg Magie said. “We have had it in our five-year plan for the past couple years to hire an ED to help with the coordination of the board, music director and volunteers.”
Magie said part of the job of the executive director is to give the symphony more of a presence in the community. “Our board has been made up of mostly musicians and music lovers, and not necessarily folks with business or nonprofit backgrounds,” he said.
Davis’ background is in nonprofit management, business development, marketing, fund development and events.
“I love music and have promoted local, regional and national bands,” David said, adding that his most recent gig was for Sunset Savor the Central Coast and Sunset Magazine’s Celebration Weekend Event in Menlo Park. Additionally, he hosts a weekly radio show on 97.3 The Rock called “Flash Forward-Flash Back Friday.” His show includes a mix of local, national and international music and live interviews.
In his new position, he said he wants to broaden public awareness of the symphony, build the scholarship campaign and fund development activities.
Davis is married to Eileen Davis, who teaches for the San Luis Coastal Unified School District. They have five adult children and a 2.5-year-old granddaughter.
“Having an [executive director] will be a great asset to the board and symphony,” Magie said.
