State Senate passes resolution establishing California Wildlife Day

California Wildlife Day recognizes the state’s diverse and unique ecosystem

– The office of Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) announced that the California State Senate passed Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 23 on Feb. 23, establishing California Wildlife Day. The resolution, introduced by Monning on Feb. 14, recognize the state’s diverse and unique ecosystem. The resolution now moves to the State Assembly.

“This resolution is designed to recognize one of our state’s greatest resources – its environment,” Senator Monning said. “The geography of the State of California is unique and diverse, with deserts, snow-capped mountains, forests, and coastlines…all of which host an extraordinary abundance of wildlife. Many Californians feel an obligation to protect our environment for future generations, and California Wildlife Day will help advance this through public education efforts about native plants and animals.”

California Wildlife Day will be recognized every year on the Spring Equinox. This year the Spring Equinox is on March 20. Currently, there is a National Wildlife Day, which was established in 2005 in memory of conservationist Steve Irwin and to bring awareness of endangered animals nationally and worldwide. The resolution was co-authored by several Senators and Assembly Members.

Senator Monning was elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2016 to represent the 17th Senate District, which includes all of San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz countiesvand portions of Monterey and Santa Clara counties. The Senator previously served in the California State Assembly for two terms. Prior to being an elected official, Senator Monning was a professor at the Monterey College of Law and a Professor of International Negotiation and Conflict Resolution at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
