– California State Parks announced that this year’s wildflower bloom in Southern California’s state parks is expected to be limited due to below-average winter rainfall. Wildflower growth relies on a mix of weather factors such as rainfall, sunlight, temperature patterns, and wind, which cause bloom timing and flower numbers to vary annually.

The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve has received less rainfall this fall and winter compared to years like 2017 and 2019, when the park saw an extraordinary bloom. This year, rainfall totals are lower than those of past seasons when the park experienced notable wildflower displays.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park has received less than an inch of rain at its headquarters this winter, significantly below its annual average of about 5.5 inches. The park saw more than 6 inches of rain in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2023, when it hosted significant wildflower blooms.

Parks such as Anza-Borrego Desert, Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Chino Hills, Red Rock Canyon, Eastern Kern County Onyx Ranch, Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Areas, and Picacho State Recreation Area have witnessed spectacular blooms in previous years. Historically, these displays follow seasons with above-average rainfall.

Despite the expected small bloom this year, these parks remain popular destinations due to their stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and recreational opportunities.

California State Parks encourages visitors to explore safely and responsibly. Cell service can be limited in some desert parks, so visitors are advised to download maps and the OuterSpatial app for updated information. Off-road driving is permitted in designated areas, but visitors are asked to avoid disturbing plants and natural features.
