State could experience heavy rain, snowmelt, causing flooding, landslides

–California will be hit by an atmospheric river event this weekend, according to the Weather Channel. The heavy rain and snowmelt could cause mass flooding and landslides.
The event will start Saturday and continue through Monday. Winter Storm Helena brought the first round of heavy mountain snow and rainfall to the state Tuesday into early Thursday. Flooding and some landslides were reported, while feet of snow piled up in the Sierra Nevada, the Weather Channel reports.
An atmospheric river event is a thin, long plume of moisture emanating from the tropics or subtropics. About 80-percent of California’s major flood events can be traced to this type of event, according to NASA.
Local California Highway Patrol received seven collision reports yesterday in the rain. Collisions that do not result in damage are not reported. “If we could get everyone to give themselves just a little extra time, leave a little extra space between their vehicles and other vehicles, and slow down for the wet conditions, we would cut those collision numbers down,” said CHP officer Patrick Seebart.
