SLO Swim Center’s limited fall schedule extended through end of November
Current modified programming schedule will continue due to lifeguard shortages in San Luis Obispo
–The SLO Swim Center will extend its current modified programming schedule through the end of November due to continued lifeguard shortages in San Luis Obispo.
The city also plans to temporarily close the therapy pool from Nov. 15 to Nov. 30 to replace the pool’s boiler and heating system. This project will improve the pool’s temperature control, resulting in money and energy savings for the SLO Swim Center.
“Safety is our top priority, and we can only offer pool use when lifeguards are available,” said Aquatics Recreation Coordinator Shawn Tucker. “We are actively recruiting new lifeguards and encourage anyone with an interest in public service to apply. It’s a fun environment, training will be provided, and there are opportunities to move up within the organization.”
Family recreational swim hours will still be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:50 p.m.; lap swim hours will be limited on most days; outside of the temporary closure in November, open therapy pool hours will continue to be suspended Mondays and Wednesdays; and aqua aerobics classes will continue to be suspended on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All other programs and hours will remain the same.
In September, the SLO Swim Center offered an updated fall schedule that was supposed to last until Sunday, Oct. 31. However, like other industries across the nation, the City’s Parks and Recreation Department has had to limit services and programs amid staffing shortages.
“We will add more programming hours and classes as lifeguards are hired and trained,” Tucker said. “Being a lifeguard gives you a lot of lifelong, transferable skills that are important in many other jobs as well as everyday life.”
