Sewer blockage has 77 ASH patients without toilet access
–77 patients at Atascadero State Hospital have been without easy access to toilets and drinking water for nine days following a massive sewer blockage, and conditions are becoming “increasingly unsanitary and tense,” according to a report by the Tribune.
Each patient without access to a running toilet has been provided with a portable urinal, which reportedly requires staff to hand dump the urinals into a 5-gallon trash can, which in turn has to be dumped in a neighboring unit.
A contractor is currently working to repair the line blockage. “It’s turning into Lord of the Flies slowly,” said one staff member.
