Record-breaking scholarships awarded to Cuesta students

–Cuesta College awarded more scholarships and more money to more students than ever before – a record-breaking 282 students received 510 scholarships totaling nearly $390,000. The Cuesta College Foundation hosted scholarship donors and student recipients at the 30th Annual Scholarship Reception on Aug. 6.

“This reception is a valued tradition at Cuesta College,” said Cuesta College Superintendent / President Dr. Jill Stearns. “I love that this event is designed to build relationships; it’s an opportunity for donors to meet the students and hear about their aspirations and goals. Their stories will serve to inspire the next generation of individuals and families to give and support our future students.”

Scholarship recipients are current students at Cuesta College, incoming transfers, and high school students attending in Fall 2019. Many students received more than one scholarship, which can be used for tuition, books, and other expenses.

“These funds have lightened my financial burden so greatly and will allow me to focus solely on my education. They give me the opportunity to put my time and energy into learning how to be a part of a team that saves lives. Each donor has made an incredible difference, and your support is so appreciated,” said nursing student Adrienne Abu-Assal.

“These scholarships are lifelines that allow us to make better lives for ourselves and our families,” said psychology student Matthew Duffy. “It fills me with pride to know that I am a member of a community that is willing to invest in my future. I look forward to earning my degrees and following your examples and giving back to our community.”

The scholarships awarded do not include the Promise Scholarship, which offers two years of fee-free education to San Luis Obispo County high school graduates. 927 students received the Promise Scholarship during the 2018-19 academic year.

The Cuesta College Foundation assists and supports Cuesta College in the attainment of educational, scientific, and cultural goals and in fulfilling its mission of service to the community. As the nonprofit arm of the college, the foundation has provided millions of dollars for student scholarships, equipment, programs, and projects for student success.
