Q&A with Atascadero School Board Candidate Incumbent Donn Clickard
What motivates you to become a school board member?
I taught in the district from 1970-2004. Shortly after retirement, I accepted an appointment to the school board. I have been elected twice since then. I sought to use my experience as a teacher and athletic director in the district to benefit the children in our schools.
What attributes are essential for successful school board members?
Having care and concern for the children and the members of the certified and classified employees of the district.
What is your vision for education in the community?
The vision for the district is that we prepare our students to be career and college ready when they graduate from high school.
How does the school board decide what is important?
The main function of the school board is to hire and evaluate the superintendent. The board also sets district policies relating to curriculum and human resources.
What is your education background?
I have earned bachelors and masters degrees. I hold learning handicapped and resource specialist credentials, a California lifetime teaching credential, and I am a Certified Athletic Administrator.
Do you represent the school system or the community?
I do not believe that is either/or. I believe that first and foremost I represent the children in our district.
What have you accomplished in regards to school-related situations that make you a good candidate?
What we have accomplished as a district we have accomplished as a team. A good candidate is someone who puts students first and has a strong belief in teamwork.
Can you comment on recent disciplinary issues within the school district, and how would you resolve them?
It is not the place of the trustee to comment on disciplinary issues and resolution of those issues is carried out by designated staff who report to the superintendent.
What are some of the issues facing AUSD?
One of the top issues facing our community, the parents, and school officials is ensuring the safety of our children in all the settings of education including classrooms, playing fields, transportation, and extra-curricular activities. School funding continues to be a matter of great concern. The trustees must be vigilant in matters of finance, the wise use of remaining bond funds, and the stewardship of our finances by district and school personnel.
