–On Friday, Oct. 19, Cuesta College will welcome more than 800 local high school seniors onto the San Luis Obispo Campus to experience a day at Cuesta College and hear about the Cuesta Promise scholarship.

The 5th Annual Promise Day begins at 9:30 a.m. with a welcome from Superintendent/President Dr. Jill Stearns in the gymnasium. Students will then be led on a campus tour, viewing various classrooms and buildings. Tours will end in the Auto Yard where faculty and staff will participate in an open house and students can learn about various departments and programs, admissions, financial aid, scholarships and more. Following the open house, students will gather in Cougar Park for lunch and giveaway prizes.

Students will also receive information on the Cuesta Promise, which offers a fee-free two years of college to all recently graduated San Luis Obispo County high school students. Launched in 2013, the Cuesta Promise has provided financial aid to nearly 3,000 San Luis Obispo County students. Initially, the purpose was to provide one- year of fee-free education and included no restrictions. Announced in the Spring of 2018, year two of the Cuesta Promise includes academic performance measures. Since 2013, Cuesta’s local high school graduate attendance rate went from 25 percent to more than 36 percent. Today, 90 percent of local graduates who attend Cuesta College immediately after graduating, come as Promise students. Last year, 876 students received the scholarship.
