Police announce partnership with ‘Nextdoor’ program
The Atascadero Police Department announced this week a partnership with Nextdoor, a free and private social network for neighborhoods.
This integration will allow the department to communicate online with community members in Atascadero neighborhoods. Residents and law enforcement personnel will be able to work together to increase safety and strengthen virtual neighborhood watch.
With the program, Atascadero community members can create private neighborhood websites to share information, including neighborhood public safety issues, community events and activities, local services, and even lost pets.
The Atascadero Police Department will be able to share helpful information with members, such as important crime alerts, emergency notifications, safety precautions and tips, details for events and crime watch meetings, and updates on activity. However, for privacy reasons the Atascadero Police Department will not be able to access residents’ websites, contact information, or content.
Nextdoor is free for residents and police. Each Atascadero neighborhood will have its own private neighborhood website, accessible only to residents of that neighborhood. Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own website. All members must verify that they live within the neighborhood before joining. Information shared on the platform is password-protected and cannot be accessed by Google or other search engines.
To sign up, or for questions, visit nextdoor.com or contact Sergeant Jeffrey Wilshusen at (805) 461-5051.
