Police address recent trend of pedestrian signal violations

Department is working with local schools to educate students about safe crossing practices

– The Atascadero Police Department has reported receiving complaints about students crossing streets in the downtown area against pedestrian signals.

Police said crossing against the signal creates safety risks and may result in enforcement action. The department is working with local schools to educate students about safe crossing practices and the proper use of crosswalks and traffic signals.

The department also encouraged parents and guardians to speak with their children about following pedestrian signals and using crosswalks correctly, particularly during busy school commute times.

Police reminded pedestrians to push the crosswalk button before crossing, wait for the walk signal, use designated crosswalks, and remain alert for traffic while crossing streets.

The department said cooperation from both drivers and pedestrians helps improve safety for everyone traveling through downtown Atascadero.
