PG&E offering free winter gas safety checks to customers

– Pacific Gas and Electric Company is offering free in-home gas appliance safety checks and pilot light re-lights as colder temperatures approach.
The utility said the safety checks help ensure that gas appliances, including water heaters, furnaces, and ovens, are operating safely and efficiently to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in the home. Carbon monoxide cannot be seen, smelled, or heard.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 400 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning not linked to fires, more than 100,000 visit the emergency room, and more than 14,000 are hospitalized. Since the start of 2025, Pacific Gas and Electric Company has responded to more than 6,000 incidents where the presence of carbon monoxide is suspected.
“This complimentary safety program is a great way for customers to prepare for increased use of their natural gas appliances this winter. A team member will inspect all gas appliances to ensure proper functionality and perform pilot re-lights. Scheduling a free gas safety check is a benefit PG&E proudly provides our customers to ensure their safety and comfort,” said Jeff Janvier, PG&E Gas Operations Lead.
Before winter months when natural gas appliances typically see the most use, the utility encourages customers to schedule an inspection by visiting www.pge.com/pilotlights. Customers also may call (800) 743-5000 to schedule appointments.
Pacific Gas and Electric Company also provided several winter gas safety tips. The utility advises customers to install carbon monoxide detectors as required in all California single-family homes and to place detectors on every floor near sleeping areas and common areas. Detectors should be tested twice a year, and batteries replaced if needed. Most detectors expire after five to seven years.
The utility also advises customers to consider installing methane detectors in enclosed spaces where gas appliances are operated. More information is available here. Customers should not use products inside the home that generate dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, including generators, outdoor grills or propane heaters, and should not use ovens or stoves to heat their homes. When using a fireplace, customers should ensure the flue is open so venting can occur through the chimney. Water heaters and other natural gas appliances should have proper ventilation.

If carbon monoxide is suspected in a home, residents should leave immediately and call 911. If the “rotten egg” odor of natural gas is detected in or around a home or business, customers should evacuate and then call 911 and Pacific Gas and Electric Company at (800) 743-5000.
