Parenting classes offered in SLO County
Parents will learn essential tips, tools, and strategies to strengthen their family and to feel more confident in their parenting role
Parent Connection has partnered with San Luis Coastal Adult School, the South County Youth Coalition, and Cuesta College Community Programs to offer a variety of parenting classes in English and Spanish for parents of toddlers to teens.
Topics include: Managing your Anger with Love and Respect, Social Media for Parents, How to Navigate a Child Centered Divorce, No Drama Discipline, Internet Safety, What Parents Need to Know about Alcohol and Other Drugs, Active Parenting, Positive Discipline, and Love and Logic. Classes run through mid-June throughout SLO County.
“The classes are being offered to help parents to better understand their developing child and know what to expect at each age and stage,” said Michele Gordon, Parent Education Program Director of Parent Connection. “Parents will learn to effectively use a variety of discipline and guidance strategies to improve family life and decrease conflict. There’s also the opportunity to problem-solve with other parents and to learn ways to manage the stress that often accompanies parenting.”
A former student and mother of three elementary-school children, Karen Woods, said “life at our home was chaotic when the kids arrived home from school at 3 p.m. each day. Getting my kids to focus on doing homework, picking up their toys, eating dinner, and getting through their baths was a nightmare. The classes taught me several techniques and suggestions that better organized my day. Now when my kids come home from school, I have a snack waiting for them, we work on homework as I’m making dinner and I’m able to enjoy spending time with them each evening before they go to bed. I’ve changed, which has caused my children to change. My new found skills have taken some of the stress out of my life. Greeting my kids after school is now something I look forward to. I recommend these classes to every parent. They have made my life easier.”
