Organization seeks to restore, protect Atascadero Lake
By Teresa Turner
– Over the past few years, the Atascadero Lake has been hit hard by the drought, but this hidden jewel has a group of concerned locals who are finding ways to bring it back to what it once was. Founder Don Lynge started the non-profit organization called “Friends of Atascadero Lake” in May 2013 along with help from co-founder Nancy Hair. Along with a seven-member board of directors, they and the community have a goal of putting the “lake” back in Atascadero Lake Park.
Water levels in the lake have dried up because of the drought, and unless water is being supplied by the Atascadero Creek that feeds into the lake, it will remain dry. Other measures are being explored to restore the water to the lake. Historically there have been three wells that are in close proximity to the lake that have been used to keep the lake full, but they are no longer viable. With Friends of Atascadero Lake and community partners, a new well has been dug to offset summer evaporation.
Filliponi and Thompson Drilling has donated the well, and up to $30,000 or more needs to be raised to construct a pipe to transport the water from the well to the lake. Friends of Atascadero Lake have started a GoFundMe campaign to meet their objective.
With this source, it will help offset summer evaporation to keep Atascadero Lake at a sustainable level. Water from the well is not being used to the fill the lake fully, but only to provide recreational opportunities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing. There is no swimming allowed.
There is also an effort to have an aeration system installed. This will assist in balancing the oxygen levels and prevent fish die-off. This project funding is needed as well of about $20,000. These funds are included in the GoFundMe campaign for the pipeline.
There are also efforts to construct a wetland area back at the south end of the lake. This will eliminate nitrates and phosphates and act as a natural filtration system to provide a “nursery” area for fish, and habitat for birds, turtles, and other wildlife. It will reduce stagnation in the lake as it enhances water clarity.
Friends of Atascadero Lake is sponsoring a Lake Perimeter Clean Up Day on Oct. 24. there will be a clean-up of the lake’s perimeter of which the public can participate in.
