New wildfire home consultation program available for Atascadero residents
Evaluation will include specific recommendations that homeowners can perform to increase survivability of their home in the event of a wildfire
– The San Luis Obispo County Fire Safe Council has awarded Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services grant funds for a Wildfire Consultation pilot program that is launching this month. Residents can sign up for the free Wildlfire Consultation Program by going to www.atascadero.org/fireconsultation and filling in their contact information and address. Department staff will then reach out to set a date and time for fire personnel to come to the residence to perform a fire assessment of the home and property.
The evaluation will include specific recommendations that the homeowner can perform that will increase the survivability of their home in the event of a wildfire. Fire personnel will assess the property vegetation, structure materials and recommended clearance as well as identify hazards particular to the residence. Feedback will be provided to the property owner at the end of the consult in the form of a list of recommendations. This guidance will enable a focused approach in reducing fire hazards and improving wildfire survivability of the home.
“Every homeowner plays a part in keeping our community safe,” explains Battalion Chief Van Son. “The more insight we can provide residents regarding fire safety and how to reduce hazards around the home, the better we can all help defend Atascadero against the threat of a wildfire.”
Due to limited funding, this program will initially be offered only to those properties located in the High and Very High Fire Severity Zones located on the west side of Atascadero. Residents that are eligible will be notified by mail with a flyer urging them to sign up before the end of February. Any residents that have questions regarding the Wildfire Consultation Program or are uncertain if their property is eligible, are encouraged to call Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services at (805) 470-3300.
