New partnership provides math support for Paso Robles students
New nonprofit TeamPaso aims to close math gaps for Paso Robles students
– TeamPaso, a newly formed local nonprofit, has partnered with the Paso Robles Unified School District, Mathnasium, and the Paso Robles community to offer free after-school math tutoring for Paso Robles students. The initiative aims to support students, many of whom are reported to be two to five years behind grade level in math, to help them prepare for careers in fields increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence and other new technologies.
“Our children’s future is in jeopardy because too many Paso Robles students are two to five years below grade level in math,” said Orlando Gallegos, executive director of TeamPaso. “Future jobs—and success—will be driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and many other new technologies that require strong math skills.”
The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District, represented by Superintendent Jennifer Loftus, expressed commitment to this initiative, stating, “Paso Robles Joint Unified School District (PRJUSD) is taking immediate action to address this need.”
The after-school tutoring sessions, scheduled to begin in November, will focus on helping students build foundational math skills needed for future job markets, which are increasingly influenced by AI, quantum computing, and other emerging technologies across industries like agriculture, transportation, medicine, energy conservation, and consumer goods.
TeamPaso is reaching out to the Paso Robles community to build partnerships and generate support. The initiative’s goal is to ensure that all students have the math skills needed to excel and to help close educational gaps in the area. Community members are encouraged to support the initiative through involvement and donations, with more information available at TeamPaso.org.
Larry Martinek, founder of Mathnasium, highlighted the effectiveness of Mathnasium’s approach, stating, “Since 2002, the Mathnasium Method has transformed how children understand and appreciate math, leading to increased confidence and enthusiasm.” Mathnasium’s system of personalized assessments and learning plans has been employed nationwide, with over 1,115 centers globally, including 170 in California.
