Morro Bay Police Department hosting citizens' academy

Academy is open to the public who live and/or work in Morro Bay

– The Morro Bay Police Department will be hosting the 2022 Citizens’ Police Academy starting Sept. 1, from 6-9 p.m. and the following eight consecutive Thursdays ending Oct. 27, at the Morro Bay Police Department.

The academy, which is open to the public who live and/or work in Morro Bay, will be a series of interactive sessions where citizens can learn firsthand how their police department operates, and how law enforcement performs within the community of Morro Bay.

The Academy will meet over nine consecutive Thursdays at the Police Department. Citizens will receive an overview of law enforcement in Morro Bay, and demonstrations from a variety of instructors from our department. Orientation topics will consist of the history of the Morro Bay Police Department, an introduction to the department divisions, and a segment giving you an opportunity to ask questions for a greater understanding of the law enforcement profession.

Instructional training will include radio communications, crime prevention, patrol procedures, crime scene investigations, and a variety of other topics.

“This is a great opportunity for our officers to collaborate and interact with our community,” Chief Jody Cox says, “This year’s academy curriculum will provide a variety of presentations to highlight “how” and “why” we do what we do. I’m looking forward to spending time with our community and I’m proud of the curriculum our officers have prepared.”

If you are a Morro Bay resident or business owner and are interested in attending the academy, call (805) 772-6225 or stop by the station and pick up an application. You can also request an application by email from Academy Coordinator Sergeant
Nicole Taylor at [email protected] or Support Services Manager Bonnie Johnson at [email protected]. Academy space is limited, and all applicants are subject to LiveScan fingerprinting and a local background check. Submit the application by Aug. 19, for consideration.
