Millennials, Gen X, Gen Z all look to internet for news and information
Verdin Marketing gives presentation on how generations affect marketing
–Research shows that the much-sought-after Millennial generation, along with those in Gen X, turn to the internet when looking for news and information, and the most effective way to reach them is by advertising through social media and other digital channels.
Mary Verdin, president of Verdin Marketing, spoke to a group of approximately 30 women at the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Business Council on Feb. 12 about the need to consider marketing channels and messaging based on the generational differences with a business’ or organization’s target audiences.
Verdin cited studies from Pew Research, Facebook Insights and resources available from the company’s digital media buying platform. A few statistics include:
Baby Boomers (ages 56-74):
o 67% own a smartphone
o 82% have at least one social media account, preferring Facebook
Generation X (ages 40-55):
o 72% prefer to get all of their news online
o 94% own a smartphone
Millennials (ages 24-39):
o Consume a majority of their news and entertainment, and do their shopping, online
o Like traditional entertainment but watch it through apps (Netflix, Hulu, ROKU, etc.)
Gen Z (ages 8-23):
o Completely digitally engaged
o Own the highest percentage of smartphones (98%)
Verdin said there is much more to discuss about these generations, and information about the Silent Generation (ages 75-95) and Generation Alpha (ages 0-7) which bookend these three cohorts that she was unable to address due to time limitations. “I find this information fascinating and could talk about it all day,” Verdin quipped. “But I know we all have 50 other things on our list to accomplish today.”
The Women’s Business Council is organized by Programs and Events Director Stacey Medema. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Women’s Business Council since I started with the chamber last May,” Medema said. “In that time I have seen how committed they are to their fundraising efforts in order to provide scholarships. I am very excited about the 2020 year of events they have put together!”
