Meeting set in Atascadero on school disaster mitigation plan
Public invited to weigh in on disaster plan for schools
– The San Luis Obispo County Office of Education is developing a Hazard Mitigation Plan aimed at reducing risks to school districts from natural and human-caused disasters. The plan will include all school districts in the county and enable them to apply for federal mitigation funding following disasters and for grants to prevent damage before disasters occur.
The plan profiles natural hazards that could potentially impact schools and includes risk and vulnerability assessments. These assessments are used to establish mitigation goals and actions to reduce or eliminate the effects of identified hazards. Once complete, all county schools will have an approved hazard mitigation plan. The San Luis Coastal Unified School District finalized its Federal Emergency Management Agency-approved plan in 2022.
Residents, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and local government agencies are invited to participate in the planning process. This broad involvement ensures the plan’s goals and actions reflect the needs of all stakeholders and the wider community.
Plan highlights will be presented at several public forums where the community can provide feedback. An Atascadero meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Morro Road Education Center, located at 8005 Morro Road in Atascadero.
A draft of the plan is available on the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education website at www.slocoe.org.
