Suspect was in possession of stolen package, bike
–On Friday morning at 11:33 a.m., the San Luis Obispo Police Department was called to Harris Street regarding a male suspect who had just stolen a package from the front porch of a residence. The victim was able to provide a description of the suspect to officers who began searching the surrounding area.
About 45 minutes later an officer was on Prado near South Higuera and located a subject matching the description of the suspect. That suspect was identified as Billy Huerta. Huerta was still in possession of the package he had stolen from the front porch on Harris. He was also in possession of a Felt beach cruiser style bicycle that officers suspect is stolen. Huerta admitted to taking the bicycle but did not provide any further details about where or when the bike was taken. At the time of this release the bicycle has not been reported stolen. The bike is described as a beige Felt MP bicycle. If you know where the bicycle came from please contact the Police Department with that information.
Huerta was placed under arrest for being in possession of stolen property and misappropriation of found property. Huerta was booked at the San Luis Obispo County jail.
The city has seen an increase in mail and package thefts when those items are left by delivery drivers and not immediately retrieved by their intended recipient. Thieves take advantage of the increased number of packages being delivered during the Christmas season. The police department encourages residents to have items delivered to locations where they can be retrieved as soon as possible.
