LGBTQ organization Equality California endorses candidate for congress
—LGBTQ rights organization Equality California has announced its endorsement for Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider’s congressional campaign.
In a recent press release, Equality California praises Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider for “demonstrating extraordinary leadership and a strong record of support for LGBT civil rights and social justice.”
In response to the endorsement, Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider released the following statement:
“I am honored to have the support of such a prominent LGBTQ organization. Recognizing full equal rights within the LGBTQ community has been a long-standing value of mine, well before entering elected office and at a time when policies such as marriage equality was not considered popular or likely. Even though the U.S. has made monumental progress with the supreme court decision confirming marriage equality, the fight for full equal rights is far from over. In congress, I will continue be a strong advocate towards passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, funding programs that address bullying in schools and promoting cultural competency of law enforcement and military personnel. I look forward to working with Equality California and other LGBTQ leaders to end discrimination and promote full equality for all.”
Schneider is running for the 24th Congressional District which encompasses Santa Barbara County, San Luis Obispo County, and part of Ventura County. Also running for the seat: Republican Justin Fareed, Salud Carbajal, a Santa Barbara Democrat, Republican Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian and Democrat William Ostrander.
