Letter: Words spoken in blind hate bring shame to our city
To the editor,
–I am a long-time resident of Atascadero. A friend of mine, who is running for office, recently came to Atascadero on cruise night. He was talking with folks about their needs and about his hopes for the future of our area. Someone who disagreed with his politics drove by screaming at my friend that he did not have right to be here, that he was a Nazi, a communist, and a socialist, none of which could be farther from the truth.
This kind of behavior disparages all the freedoms our constitution guaranteed us. Our country has become a place where one person’s views or TV station are the only words some individuals want to hear. There is so much fear that many of us close our eyes to injustice, to lies, to the things that are for “the common good”, hearing only what the fear mongers want us to hear. Our forefathers predicted this and told us to fight against it.
To that person who shouted hate I would say: If you truly believe in this country, intently listen to all sides and then make an intelligent, informed decision. Words spoken without it are just blind hate and shame our city.
